Hostility and anger may impact physical health via an increase in allostatic load, a condition in which the body's natural ability to maintain stability when exposed to internal and external stress is compromised [16, 17].
Allostatic load can lead to an elevation in physiological responses such as BP and heart rate, which can then lead to the development of CAD and related diseases.
It has been suggested that, while unforgiving responses like hostility and anger may also be associated with higher levels of allostatic load, forgiving responses may decrease allostatic load [18].
The stress and negative affect system in turn activate changes in sympathetic nervous system functioning and, over time, add to allostatic load (McEwen, 1998).
